About Us

It all began with Babette...

Happy cows make the best milk. That’s what Stina Kutzer realized in 2004, when her husband gave her a beautiful Jersey calf named Babette for her birthday. In 2010, with milk from Babette, Babette’s daughters, and the rest of a small Jersey herd, Stina and her sister, Marta Willett, started Gammelgården Creamery, a farmstead creamery in Pownal, VT.

OUR JOURNEY

In the fall of 2010, we began making skyr, our signature product, and bringing skyr and other dairy products to local farmers markets. Every weekend family and friends volunteered and helped out at the Dorset and Bennington, VT and Troy, NY Farmers Markets - all of us proud to be selling fresh, delicious dairy products made at our creamery.  We continue to cherish the relationships we formed with other local farmers selling their wares at the weekly markets.

Over the last 12 years, with the help of family, friends, Williams College students and faculty, Gammelgården more than quadrupled its production and sales.

In 2013 we began wholesaling our products in specialty food stores in Williamstown, MA, Bennington and Manchester, VT, and the Honest Weight Food Coop in Albany, NY. Today Gammelågrden skyr can be found in over 40 locations throughout New England. We have upgraded to a 100 gallon pasteurizer to try to meet the growing demand.  We are proud of our growing production team which includes local residents who share our commitment to quality.

COMMITMENT TO QUALITY

Gammelgården is committed to the health & comfort of every cow who gives us milk. That’s what makes our products uniquely delicious. Our commitment to quality begins with farming practices and continues all the way to the market. All Gammelgården products are handmade, hand-packaged and personally delivered by us. Our special recipe for cooking and small-batch pasteurization preserves both the freshness and the nutrient content of skyr.

SUPPORT LOCAL

We are grateful for our loyal customers, whose support has been essential to skyr's success.  As demand for skyr has outgrown our small Jersey herd, we now use high-quality milk from other local farms, maintaining product quality while supporting local dairy farmers - all cows are not treated with antibiotics or rBGH. We use pure VT Maple Syrup, Brattleboro-produced Sidehill Jam and Blake Hill Preserves in Windsor, VT.

Thank you for supporting local farms & trying our skyr!!
